This is a solid example of an early Model 1892 Krag rifle that has been arsenal converted into the model 1896 configuration. The side of the receiver is marked "U.S 1894 SPINGFIELD ARMORY" next to the S/N. This 1896 has the new 1896 stock, not the modified 1892 stock, which has the ramrod filled with a wood plug. The stock is inspector marked "JSA 1897" with the script "P" proofmark. Standard blue and oil quenched finish. The extractor still has majority of the peacock nitre blue finish. CONDITION: Excellent. Stock shows only nominal impressions. The oil quenched receiver is a nice soft grey. Barrel bands, cocking piece bolt sleeve and safety, retains majority of rich blue. Bore is bright. Super condition and seldom seen 1892 built 1896 with a very readable cartouche.
