(1869) 30" barrel set is engraved "W. W. GREENER. NO 48 DUKE ST. ST JAMES'S & NO 11 STRAND LONDON, LAMINATED STEEL INDESTRUCTIBLE BY GUN POWDER" on concave rib. Case hardened patent breeches have fine scroll engraved rib extension and engraved platinum blow-outs. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with gauge, Birmingham black powder proofs, serial numbers, and Greener elephant logos. Matching numbered ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail (steel worm under cap) is held by two plain pipes. Breech iron with very nicely filed fences has tang engraved with near full coverage very well cut shaded scroll. Front spring locks with tall sculpted serpentine hammers are engraved with open scroll at fronts under "W. W. GREENER" and with large shaded scroll at nicely rebated rears. Trigger plate has very fancy finial matching thimble. Blued trigger guard with more shaded scroll on bow, has serial number on tang. Well marbled and nicely figured European walnut stock measures 14 - 1/2" over plain steel buttplate. Stock features widely spaced checkering at grip and forend, and a vacant silver shield at top of grip. Stock attaches to barrels with captive sliding bolt through shaped and engraved steel escutcheons. CONDITION: Very fine. Barrels retain 50 - 60% original Damascus finish. Locks, breech iron and patent breeches retain over 80% of their original case hardening color. Trigger guard retains about 40% of its original blue. Buttplate has only traces of blue, mostly flaked. Stock retains most of its original hand rubbed oil finish, a bit dry. A crack at wrist has been masterfully repaired, and is nearly undetectable. Bores appear to be very fine, shiny with some frosting toward muzzles. Locks are crisp. A really lovely old Greener. MGM178.
