Lot #1020:
(A) J.C.J. MEYER BALTIMORE PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE.
John C. J. Meyer operated circa 1856 to 1861 out of a shop at 14 W. Pratt Street in Baltimore, Maryland. A few days after the opening volleys of the Civil War on April 19, 1861 federal troops were enroute through Baltimore on their way to Washington DC travelling along Pratt Street where they were attacked by Southern sympathizers. In addition to pelting the troops with paving stones, some in the mob "requisitioned" arms from Meyer's nearby establishment. This rifle is signed in script "J.C.J. Meyer Balt. Md." towards the breech of its relined octagon barrel. The gun is currently fitted with a modern globe front sight and 4" staff sight. The percussion lock is also signed "J.C.J. MEYER" and is equipped with double set triggers. Nicely figured walnut stock with checkered forend and wrist, and polished brass mounts. A hickory wiping rod is included. PROVENANCE: Ex. Dan Hartzler Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel and lock have a pleasant browned appearance. Brass appears cleaned. Stock has some expected light impressions. Strong, bright bore as relined. Fine mechanics. Set trigger in order.
