Of classic form but oversized, suggesting use as a wall gun or another position where the guns did not have to be lugged about, allowing the form to be made larger for more devastating effect without concern for mobility. Large bore suggests true samurai use rather than a hunting or sporting purpose. Swamped barrel with a banded muzzle fit with traditional Japanese style fine front and rear sights. Barrel is signed and registered, manufactured by Kagotani Yozaemon of Settsu, and registered in September of 1887 in Okayama Prefecture. Traditional Japanese matchlock action and stock, with appropriately sized ramrod in channel. CONDITION: Very good, showing evidence of use throughout. Barrel with a pleasing smooth patina throughout with some handling marks and some silvering scuffs. Rearmost barrel pin and one trigger pin missing along stock from period of use. Lock is strong but does not trip consistently, appears to be an issue with the mainspring. This is a good example of a real war-use Samurai tanegashima, signed by the maker, and registered in the modern period.
