(A) MARTIALLY INSPECTED GWYN & CAMPBELL MODEL 1862 CARBINE

Often referred to as the Union Model as so stamped on left side of frame. Built in Hamilton Ohio from 1863 through 1864. This is a Type II carbine, second variation of which 1370 were produced. The US Government pursued 13 contracts with 8 states for this carbine during the war. This stunning example features the case color frame with the blued octagon to round barrel, a dovetailed front sight, small base ladder rear sight, saddle ring and bar, serpentine lever, falling block, and walnut stock with metal butt plate. The maker legend is stamped on right side plate. There are several government sub inspector stamps. The left side of stock has a bold "WHR" cartouche for William H. Russell. The block and upper tang are finished in peacock fire nitre blue. Shows all externally matching serial numbers. CONDITION: Excellent. Frame and side plate retain at least 70% color, some still quite bold. The lever, hammer and butt plate colors have darkened. Barrel retains nearly all of its rich rust blue finish. The tang and block retain nearly all their peacock blue. Screws are all true. Stock is excellent with nominal impressions. Mechanically sound with a mirror bright bore. Simply outstanding and does not appear to have seen any real use. Would be hard pressed to find any better example.
