This widely issued Civil War carbine was made in Stonington, Connecticut. There is documented use by at least ten cavalry units during the entirety of the war. This is the Type II model that features a dovetailed front sight, folding ladder rear sight, the flip up chamber with serial number, the sidelock with Joslyn legend, and one piece walnut stock with single band and metal butt plate. Left side of barrel breech has the "G.W.S." sub inspector stamp for George W. Sherman. The left side of stock has two identical inspector cartouche stamps including "FDL" for Frederick D. Livingston. Buttplate has a US stamp. CONDITION: Very good to fine. All of the metal surfaces are now a crisp, smooth patina with the barrel showing a blue hue and all the legends are sharp. Stock is excellent with only nominal small dings or impressions. Mechanically sound with a bold bright bore with minor frosting. A really clean, untouched example.
