This is a mid 19th century market gun used by professional wildfowl hunters, often employed on flat boats to shoot into flocks of waterfowl with the intention of killing as many birds per shot as possible to take to market along the Chesapeake Bay. Laws were passed by the end of the century to protect the migratory birds from mass extinction. There are no visible maker stamps or import marks. This behemoth features a full round barrel, an engraved exposed hammer, engraved trigger guard, engraved butt plate, a lightly carved walnut half stock with a roll over cheek piece and engraved silver plates. CONDITION: Very good. Surprisingly nice condition given the duty it was made for. The stock is solid, not cracked, with thinning checkering and minor abrasions. Metal is all in the white with overall freckling. Hammer is in working condition. Bore is dark.
