Offered is an extremely scarce factory blue open top in .44 M&H caliber, with an estimated 5% of all the big frame Merwin's were finished in factory blue. This early model features scoop flutes, open top, blue finish, 2nd type frame and hammer, with square saw handle frame and the desirable mottled red rubber grips with lanyard. It has all matching numbers (6064). This model was made prior to the closed top series in the late 1870's. The caliber is not stamped on left side which indicates it was made for the original .44 M&H cartridge. CONDITION: Frame retains 15-20% original bright blue with balance a smooth soft patina. The cylinder flutes still have some nice bright blue with balance the same patina as frame. The barrel exhibits sharp factory legends but is simply a smooth patina. The bore retains sharp rifling and the action is smooth and indexes correctly. The grips are nice but checkering has worn smooth in some spots but fit well and are all original.
