(A) RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1893 SLIDE ACTION SHOTGUN
Dates to 1896. As most Winchester collectors know, the 1893 that Browning designed was the so-called first successful pump action shotgun trailing the Model 1882 Spencer pump by eleven years. Due to the newly developed smokeless powder and the some what weak action of the Model 1893, Winchester made an offer to 93 owners to trade up to the stronger Model 1897 at no cost. This recall began in July of 1897. The Model 93 was designed for black powder only, only available in 12 gauge with a chamber length that was 2 5/8 rather than 2 3/4" and was only available from 1893 until 1897 and only came with the solid frame. A total of 34,176 were built. Once returned, Winchester destroyed them. Some estimate the return rate at about 75% of total production making any 93 scarce, especially if in decent, unaltered condition. This shotgun is standard with blue finish, a single bead front sight, round knob walnut stock, smooth steel butt plate and grooved round base forearm. Barrel is marked 12 GA along with last patent date reading December of 1892. The slide bar is stamped Model 1893. CONDITION. Fine. The frame retains about 70 % of its blue finish. The barrel and tube retain about the same with barrel blue starting to blend. The stocks are in excellent condition showing minor impressions with negligible dings. Mechanically sound. Bore is fairly clean with light abrasions. Far better than most encountered.
