Approximately 12,500 were produced under Federal contract during the Civil War by Remington. Blade front sight and 3-lead position rear sight. Case hardened lockplate dated 1863 at the tail. Unusual early style "U.S." and Federal eagle over 2-line Remington address lock marking which have been added to this example at a later date. Brass mounted walnut stock with patch box retaining spare nipple. Left stock flat has boxed Richard Paine "RP" and Benjamin Hannis "BH" inspection cartouches. CONDITION: Excellent. Nearly all of the bright original barrel blue is retained with some losses towards the breech. Lock colors are dark. Stock is clean with some scattered dings and crisp cartouches. Brass exhibits a mellow patina. Fine, well defined bright bore with 7 groove rifling. Crisp mechanics.
