This second model Hotchkiss musket was assembled by Springfield Armory with a Winchester made action for the US Navy. 999 such rifles were made from 1880 to 1881. Barrel has "WWK / R / US / (anchor) and "HN" inspections, in addition to standard "V / P / (eagle head)" proofs. Pinned blade front sight and rifle rear. Action has standard Winchester 3-line address and a "HN" inspection on the bolt. The oiled walnut stock is marked near the butt plate with a boxed "SWP / 1881" Samuel Porter inspection cartouche. CONDITION: Very good. Arsenal finishes have drifted to a plum brown patina. Stock has some light scattered marks and added finish. As is often seen on these rifles, the wrist has a repaired break. Crisp, legible cartouche. Well defined, bright bore with a few cleaned spots. Fine mechanics.
