Serial number 156870 manufactured in 1876 at the Sharps factory located in Bridgeport Connecticut. 30" octagon barrel marked "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN.", "OLD RELIABLE", and "CALIBRE 40" at the breech. Chambered in .40-70, 2-1/4 BN caliber. Blue barrel with casehardened receiver, hammer, and lever. Nickel plated crescent style buttplate. Globe front sight, R.S. Lawrence combination express rear, and Sharps marked mid-range tang sight. Single trigger. Oil finished plain straight grain stock and forearm. According to Frank Sellers book titled "Sharps Firearms" only 4 number 3 grade mid-range were built. CONDITION: Excellent overall with 98% heavy original rust blue remaining on barrel. Excellent bore, bright and shiny with excellent rifling. Approximately 80% case colors on receiver, hammer, and breech block. All original unmolested screws. Accompanying the rifle is a Sharps archival letter dated March 1, 1999 , signed "Dick Labowskie", documenting configuration and shipment to L.H. Mayott, a firearms, fishing tackle, and hardware dealer located in Springfield Massachusetts. Overall a high condition Sharps mid-range rifle in a rare and desirable configuration. -MKS-
