The factory letter states that this revolver was shipped to the New York Naval Yard on April 20, 1898 in a shipment of 200 guns which coincided with the United States declaring war with Spain (April 25, 1898). The majority of these weapons were deployed to the U.S. naval and marine forces for the Spanish-American War. It is interesting in that this example has the British marks and no US inspector stamps. The butt is stamped with the USN and anchor. The underside of the barrel has the .38 tons British die stamp with a proof stamp (not US). The last patent date on the two line barrel legends is 1895. Standard blue finish but fitted with the Colt gutta percha grips, not smooth walnut. CONDITION: Fine. The trigger guard and straps are patina and there is thinning at muzzle end. Otherwise, revolver retains approximately 80% blue finish. All of the legends are strong. Grips are excellent. Mechanically sound with a strong clean bore.
