Manufactured in 1878. This is an early example that features the thumbprint dust cover, aftermarket buckhorn rear sight, German silver front sight, walnut stocks, and rifle butt plate. Someone replaced the original side plates with ill-fitting brass copies. They also replaced the nose and tube cap which which are also brass. To keep the loading gate shut, they installed a crude spring. Features full octagon barrel and full length magazine tube. Sharp two line Winchester legend at top of barrel and 45-60 stamped near breech. CONDITION: Good. All of the iron parts are a freckled patina. The brass has dulled. Wood is proud to metal with usual dings. Bore is poor. Great parts gun or to build yourself a nice big fifty. PROVENANCE: Jim Cyr Collection.
