Circa 1922-1926 per "Holland & Holland: 'The Royal' Gunmaker" by Dallas. Chopper lump barrels with a diminutive bead front sight on a slightly sunken, solid, concave game rib. Signed "Holland & Holland" over right tube and "98. New Bond Street, London" over left. Rear of rib with 2" strip of thin floral tendril engraving with a gold inlaid "1" designation that it was originally once of a pair. Breeches decorated with bands of stiffleaf engraving. Underside with matching serial numbers ahead of barrel flats. Barrel flats with London nitro proofs for a choked 20 bore with 7/8 oz of shot. Holland & Holland style self opening system. Splinter forearm with a reinforced Anson release with gold inlaid "1" beneath the plunger. Checkered with English style flat top checkering in a modified point pattern with mullered borders about an open diamond with escutcheon, exterior iron engraved with wide cut floral scroll and thin tendril work. Interior iron with matching serial number in recess for H&H self opener. Action and lockplates engraved in the classic Royal scroll pattern with medium sized acanthus scrollwork with strapwork edge, boldly signed "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" on each lock plate and "ROYAL / SELF-OPENER / PATENT 1922" on bottom of action. Flats with view proof and serial number. Locks are fit with Holland & Holland style hand detachable lockplates and gold line cocking indicators. Double triggers bladed for a right handed shooter protected by a blued trigger guard with a right hand rolled edge, engraved with the serial number behind the trigger guard, and with scrollwork en suite. Break open lever with a gold inlaid "1" and "ROYAL EJECTOR". Automatic safety with gold inlaid intaglio "SAFE" ahead of slide. Walnut stock teardrops behind locks, Royal diamond cross-section straight pistol grip, point pattern checkering with mullered borders about the pistol grip, a golden initial plaque at toe line, and a checkered butt. In a contemporary leather wrapped and brass tabbed case, interior lined in wine cloth, with reproduction Holland & Holland trade label in lid and containing pair snap caps, a rag, and oil bottle. CONDITION: Very good as conserved and refreshed in the English tradition. Barrels with virtually all of a good quality reblack, with some scattered pockmarks about the New Bond Street address. Locks with substantial case colors, as much as 40%, with the balance a lovely dove grey. Stocks with nicely recut checkering at the wrist and some scattered handling marks and impressions, including some mild rash at toe. Mechanically fine, bores are smooth with some very mild residue, ejectors in time but soft. Case is good with some surface scuffs and handling marks, inteiror with some rubs and looseness to cloth, with a strip missing in butt partition. A well balance and proportioned small bore from the Golden Age of the British trade.
