Lot #2027:
(C) SPRINGFIELD ARMORY US MODEL 1903 BOLT ACTION RIFLE.
Barrel is dated 8-18 with RIA and Ordnance bomb stamp while frame is stamped Springfield. This is a rebuild of sorts in that the frame and barrel do not match makers but do match to the same year. The left side of stock has the JSA cartouche stamp for J. Sumner Adams whose block letter stamped was used in 1915-1916. The walnut stock features the Type 2 single rear stock reinforcing bolt and wide finger grooves dating from 1910 through 1916. Also has the Type 2 so called high hump handguard with sight groove and the inside fixture slot. The proof P at wrist is in script. The fully finely checkered butt plate with trap is a Type 4 used from 1910 through 1917. The barrel band is a Type 3 split band with solid swivel used from 1918. The straight bolt has a Type 2 cocking piece used from 1905 through 1918. The cut-off is a Type 2 with no serifs. The 2700 yard rear sight has the checkered knobs with no grooves used post 1921. The smooth Type 1 trigger was first used in 1903. Rifle uses all milled parts, has standard blue finish and comes with a period twin brass frog sling. CONDITION: Fine. The stock is superb exhibiting only minor impressions and a beautiful finish. Trigger guard, floor plate and bands are patina. Frame and barrel retain generous blue. The bore is sharp and has a TE reading of 1 and an ME reading of 1. Sharp WWI period rifle that even has some of the peacock blue on retaining spring.
