The Parker Hale sniper rifle was the runner up to the Accuracy International L96 in the British Army sniper trails in the mid-80s, with the Parker Hale narrowly losing, primarily as a result of the L96 having an early variant of what would become the chassis system, while the M85 was still using a more traditional stock. After the trials, Parker Hale sold the manufacturing license to Gibbs Rifle Company, and sold their stock of rifles. Despite the L96's success, there were several military and police units that acquired the M85 for independent use. This example is equipped with the correct fixed front sight, folding rear sight under the specially made Parker Hale marked single piece scope mount, and McMillan style palm swell stock with spacers at rear. Correctly marked "P-H M85 CAL 7.62X51mm / MADE IN ENGLAND" under scope mount and electropencilled with matching serial number on bolt. Scope mount hosts a period Hensoldt 10x42 fixed power scope; during the commercial sales, numerous sights could be had, primarily Schmidt & Bender and Kahles, also in 10x42 configuration. Parker Hale manufactured QD bipod on a spigot mount. Sliding knob for sling swivel on underside of forearm, and second swivel mounted on toe line just behind pistol grip. Left side of action with serial number and BNP nitro proof; nitro proof also visible on left side of barrel shank, right in front of receiver. 2 stage trigger, detachable box magazine. No import mark observed. Accompanied by 2 manuals, parts list, and test target. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory finishes, including a British style matte blacking on metal, and OD green stock. Some minor marks from handling and storage throughout, none serious. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with sharp rifling. Previous owner has affixed a small piece of felt under the ejection port, presumably to prevent rubbing. Some crude marks from manufacturing visible on receiver, but based on distension from stamping of model designation, are unlikely to be a refinish. White paint has been used to accentuate serial numbers. Glass is clear. This is a really lovely example of a true British sniper rifle. EMW
