(N) EXCEPTIONAL COSTA MESA ARMALITE AR-18 MACHINE GUN WITH ORIGINAL SCOPE AND PROVENANCE TO SPECIAL TACTICS AND RESPONSE TEAM (CURIO & RELIC).
Curio and Relic eligible Armalite AR-18 machine gun with Costa Mesa address as purchased by Randell S. Coleman of the Lafayette Parrish, Louisiana County Sheriff’s department in 1977. The gun was previously owned by the Memphis Police Department. Coleman was a member of the Special Tactics and Response Team, and a letter from him documenting his ownership as well as some encounters he had using this weapon in the line of duty is included with this lot. Also photographs taken of him while responding to a correctional center “attempted jail escape” and newspaper photograph from 1977. Also included is a copy of the registration form showing his ownership of this gun. Accessories include: two 20-round and one 30-round original magazines as well as an original sling, one manual, and a vintage Armalite catalog. The Armalite AR-18 was intended to be a refined development of the M16 and incorporates a side folding stock, adjustable rear flip-up peep sight, ambidextrous selector and ejection port cover which closes when the bolt is in the forward position. It is immediately recognizable by its distinctive bolt cocking handle. It was an early design to provide for a more compact weapon for our and others military forces. PROVENANCE: Letter from Coleman dated April 1998, newspaper clipping with photograph dated Aug 21, 1977, “SWAT Team to Train”, multiple photographs of Coleman in uniform holding this very rifle during the “jailbreak attempt”, in January 1980, and NFA transfer form showing outgoing transfer of this very rifle from Coleman approved on Feb 18, 1998. Electronic NFA registry indicates “ARMALITE” in the manufacturer’s block. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish extremely fine to near excellent original finish with some light handling marks. Composite furnishings extremely fine to near excellent. Bore is near excellent shiny and bright. Bolt face is near excellent. Mechanics are crisp. This is a select fire machine gun. Scope optics of original scope are clear. An extremely rare opportunity to acquire a highly desirable machine gun with provenance. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2026-09-103.
