High condition 1939 manufactured Soviet DHSK-38 Heavy Machine gun in 12.7x108mm (.50 caliber). This ammunition both looks and performs like, but is not interchangeable with, the U.S. .50 BMG round. This gun feeds steel belted ammunition on a rotating block which resembles the cylinder of a revolver pistol. The slide moving back and forth on the right side operates the feed lever, which in turn, rotates the cylindrical feed block. There are 6 recesses for cartridges in this feed block. The metal belt which holds the cartridges goes through the feedway under the top cover and the rounds are pulled from the belt as the rolling cylinder feeds each cartridge downward into the bottom of the action where the forward motion of the bolt chambers the cartridge. Very ingenious system. Backplate handle has a twin trigger system. Accessories with this gun include the wheeled mount which is also a tripod when the legs are extended, a set of AA sights in original wooded box marked with number 40199, a total of 4 barrels (one of which has the original 1938 muzzle brake on it), with detached front sight blade. 1 spare operating piston with housing, 1 AA shoulder extension brace. 1 spare backplate assembly, feed roller, top cover, rear sight, bottom mounting plate, and bolt. Total of 5 50-round steel belts, 2 steel cans of 104 rounds each with red/black added paint to lid and marked “12.7 B-32 LM”. Additionally, 2 more original Russian (with embossed star) cans which mount on the left side of the mount. 96 additional purple/red tipped rounds with Farsi headstamps, and sealed “UN” marked spam can of 80 rounds is also included for a total of 384 rounds. This gun is very noteworthy not only because it is such an early gun (1st production year), but also because it was taken into Finnish service at some point. Perhaps captured during the “Winter War” or the Continuation War. The entire block which contain the safety mechanism is a non-matching replacement, with Finnish "Safe" and "Fire" markings. Research indicates only 4 specimens were sold by Finland to Interarmco in the spring of 1960. This is almost certainly one of them. All of these guns imported by Interarmco would have been deactivated. Markings on the side-plate of this gun bear this out. There is a hand stamped "REBUILT" over obliterated markings, followed by "12.7 MM" over "D SH K 38" on the sideplate. Further down on the sideplate is a more professionally added "REBUILT BY STUMP ARAMAMENT HARLAN KY". These markings are evidence of reactivation. Consignor states that this gun runs well with all three types of ammunition. Electronic NFA registry indicates “Russian” as the manufacturer. Consignor also states that this gun was in a museum prior to his acquisition of it. PROVENENCE: From the personal collection of a very discerning and advanced machine gun collector who desires to remain anonymous as he draws down his collection. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent original blued finish with some loss of finish to the high edges and a some patina in various places. Bores of the barrels range from extremely fine, shiny and bright, to strong rifling, dark in the grooves. Bolt face is extremely fine. Spare parts bolt is very clean and in the white. Revolving roller and house also have near excellent blued finish. Spare top cover, backplate, and some of the other small spare parts exhibit surface corrosion, as does AA shoulder brace. This is a full-auto only machine gun. This is an absolutely incredible rare find for the World War II machine gun collector. Unlikely that there will ever be another opportunity to acquire one of these in such high condition with such a nice assortment of accessories. Look for additional lots of ammunition for this machine gun. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. JWK 2023-4-27
