Measures 7 - 9/16" from tip of kissaki to munemachi. Uchi zori curvature with iori mune, hira zukuri form with a fairly active tight gunome hamon with plenty of visible nie. Katte sagari yasurime with a small section of kiri at top. Single punched mekugi-ana, ha agari kurijiri nakagojiri. Copper habaki. Appropriately sized tsuba in with copper seppa. Tsuba decorated around the rim with incised waves, appropriate slot for kozuka. Leather tsuka over a rayskin same, with gilt menuki in the form of stalking tigers. Fuchi and kashira both decorated with incised waves en suite with tsuba. Mixed metal kozuka with an illegibly signed blade, depicting a dragon on a roe ground. Kozuka replaced and slightly too large for the cutout. Menuki in the form of a samurai stabbing a Saru-Tora-Hevi applied to saya. CONDITION: Blade is out of polish with several details such as hada obscured. Kissaki slightly malformed, and there is a pair of stripes on right side of blade that appears to be a cleaning chemical. Some surface scratches. Mounts are good with some rubbing to high edges, but tight and complete. Same slightly shrunk. Saya good, good cracks in lacquer down spine and face, with spine missing a 1/4" x 4 - 3/4" strip of lacquer. PROVENANCE: Roger Bender Collection. EMW
