8 ken kabuto with raised gilt fukurin and maedate in the form of an evilly grinning oni demon, decorated with horsehair. Horns measure 8". Maedate of lacquered wood to prevent a poorly weighted helmet. Shikoro of four lames, bound with light red cord and constructed of gilded iron. Red cruciform knot attached to hanger at rear of hachi. Mabizashi in black lacquer en suite with hachi. Cloth wrapped fukigaeshi in floral patterns. Liner appears original. Interior of shikoro gilded. Mempo of iron construction with red lacquer interior and browned exterior. Yodare-kake of iron with gilding and bound by tan cord with black lacquer interior. Dou chestpiece of gilded iron with top collar with floral printed cloth wrap; scales and articulated pieces affixed by light red cords, armor piece affixed with horn tabs. Central silver cloud motif with cruciform knot. Bottom on armor engraved with wind motifs. Left and right wings articulated. Kusazuri of gilt leather. Interior cloth wrapped with gilding. Dou backpiece of gilded iron with cloth wrapped articulated collar in floral pattern en suite with chestpiece. Slot for standard of forged iron and black lacquered. Armored skirt en suite with chestpiece, with a few strips of iron as some lames are ferromagnetic. Associated tassets (sode) of gilded iron with orange cord binding and a golden cloth interior lined with blue stripes. Cuisse skirt, armguards ending in gauntlets (kote), and greaves of a light forest green with chainmail reinforced by sections of gilt iron. Green cloth (silk?) with simple birds and floral patterns. Housed in a wooden travel case with no markings but banded in iron. Also included is a neckpiece that appears to be of Chinese manufacture with engraved brass tabs, with 2 lame neck defense bound with orange cord and decorated with further orange cord and multicolored black, red, and offwhite cord. CONDITION: Good. Some chipping to gilding throughout and some minor losses. Some pieces, especially some cords, have broken with time and been either repaired or replaced. Maedate of a more modern construction that balance of armor, which appears to be Edo period, with exception given to Chinese neckpiece. Travel case has two replaced trims with visible wood glue from repairs. Silk has some separations, mostly across backing. Given the varying styles, it is possible that the armor is made of composite pieces, but extremities obviously from the same suit, as is dou. A nicely presenting set. EW
