Of classic form with a well formed head acid etched with florals and geometrics supporting vignettes of a crowned "FIII" at top, a set of scales of justice, a scepter and a sword under a cross flanked by "FIRMAMENTA REGNORUM" (trans: Foundations of Kingdoms, a motto traditionally associated the Ferdinand III). Reverse with same FIII cypher, a coat of arms depicting two rampant lions in the second and third quarters, a striped field in the first and fourth, and a shield inescutcheon with mixed horizontal and diagonal striping, with a "1629" date at the base of the blade. Languettes of four tongues mounted and nailed to a haft from another polearm. CONDITION: Good, especially for a nearly 400-year-old blade. Approximately 8" of the top of the glaive has been splice repaired during its period of use. Acid etching has worn in some places, but cyphers and designs still legible throughout. Typical age related spotting and patina, especially to base. Shaft very good, solid and has a pleasing appearance. A rare glaive from the guard of a Holy Roman Emperor.
