late 19th-century French miniature salesman’s sample or demonstration safe by Bauche, prominently fitted with an ornate maker’s plaque identifying the patented “L’Incombustible” fire-resistant safe system and the Bauche works at Gueux, Marne, France. Substantially constructed in metal with black-painted panels surrounded by heavy reinforced bands and numerous raised rivet heads, closely replicating the construction and imposing appearance of a full-size commercial safe. The front is fitted with an elaborate circular lock escutcheon surmounted by a crown, separate key opening and additional locking hardware. The robust construction and detailed miniature hardware indicate its purpose as a salesman’s or demonstration model illustrating the security and fire-resistant construction offered by the manufacturer. Showing an appealing untouched appearance with age-related surface wear, oxidation and losses to the finish, giving the piece considerable industrial character. One hardly noticeable crack above key slot, left side. A rare and highly collectible example of 19th-century French safe-making history and an outstanding piece for collectors of salesman’s samples, antique safes, locks, banking memorabilia and early industrial technology. Original lid, original top plaque in French, original latches, and original hinges.
