AN EDO PERIOD TSUBA DEPICTING A PEACOCK
Of brass construction with a an applied brass rim about the perimeter referred to as a fukurin. Open hitsu-ana, with designs of a peacock in a floral scene on a textured ishemi ground. Peacocks were symbols of status in Japan and functioned very similarly to guard dogs, and were favored by daimyo to guard their estates. In a cloth bag. CONDITION: With evidence of fitting at the nakago hitsu-ana, and other scattered darkness as expected from age. A neat example with a rare motif.
