Reverse 'P' guard with bird's head pommel, backstrap and languettes. Dark patina to hilt. Grip wrap worn to wood, but silver binding wire in place. Blade curved, single edge with rudimentary false edge. Broad central fuller. CONDITION: Fair to good. Small nicks to the edge. Good point. Blade is dark grey mixed with black and brown, but showing traces of etched motifs of "GR" and royal crest on what was likely a blue and gilt blade with military, patriotic and floral motifs. Blade is horseman's length. The 1796 pattern had a long life and was imitated in the US and elsewhere as light cavalry came to dominate the mounted arm. (SR)
