C: 1920. The Operators Piano Company, Chicago IL. The Coinola SO was Operators Piano Company's largest keyboard-less orchestrion. Introduced in 1920 after Prohibition was imposed and the trend was toward smaller instruments, approximately 50 are believed to have been made. Operators described it as "an orchestrion of beauty, character, and stability. It fits in and harmonizes with the surroundings to produce that ripe spirit of refinement so much desired" Instrumentation includes: 88 note piano with 78 notes played automatically, lower octave bass coupling, mandolin, violin and flute pipes, bass drum, cymbal, tympani, snare drum, triangle, wood block, tambourine, and xylophone. Piano treble mute for playing pipe and xylophone solos. Plays Columbia, Capitol, and QRS 10-tune "O" rolls. PROVENANCE: Believed to be originally owned by a Chicago mobster, acquired by the Nickelodeon Tavern in Chicago Heights in 1965, and to a Wisconsin collector in 1985. Acquired by the current owner in 2015. Restored by Dave Ramey Sr. in 1986 and Art Reblitz in 2015. CONDITION: This beautiful orchestrion has sat in a climate controlled home since restoration was completed in 2015. Very light wear from transportation, with full working operation. Only 3 of these original Coinola SO's are know to exist and this one is ready for its next home.
