C. 1940s–1960s. A finely carved matched pair of Asian figures depicting a scholar and court lady, each holding large blooming peony flowers, a traditional symbol of prosperity, honor, and beauty in Chinese culture. The male figure is shown with a long flowing beard and staff, representing wisdom and longevity, while the female figure features an elaborate headdress with detailed floral ornamentation. Both figures display intricate hand-carved workmanship, including layered robes, delicate floral carving, and finely incised facial features. The figures are mounted on carved hardwood bases, typical of mid-20th century Chinese export decorative carvings. The female figure appears to be carved bone, while the male scholar figure appears to be carved ivory, based on the smoother surface, tonal variation, and finer carving detail. It is not uncommon for export pairs from this period to be produced in different materials, particularly during the mid-20th century when ivory became more difficult to source and workshops supplemented with bone. Very good overall condition with minor age toning and natural patina. The male figure has a small break, with the detached piece retained and included. Original carved hardwood bases present. Each: 2 - 1/4" x 1 - 3/4" x 7 - 1/2".

Condition: (Excellent).

Item Dimensions: Each: 2 - 1/4" x 1 - 3/4" x 7 - 1/2".
COLLECTION OF 2: ASIAN IVORY FIGURINES.
