C.F. A.V.B. Norman's "Rapier to Smallsword" Hilt 58 for a nearly identical example. Blade measures 40 - 1/2" with 38 - 3/8" exposed from guard; diamond cross section form with a spearpoint tip, edges blunt. There are 2 clear armorer's marks at the ricasso, consisting of a castle and a lion sinister. Hilt is slightly fluted at ricasso. Quillions with sparse decoration and gentle curling at terminals. Grip wire is tight. Cylindrical pommel is slightly flared at base; capstan does not show evidence of diassembly. CONDITION: Blade is essentially dove grey with a few scattered areas of mild brown patina, with some pockmarks and delamination from age that do not detract. Grip wire is tight. Grip is excellent, essentially chocolate brown throughout, with scattered evidence of old lacquer and rough forging. Small collection tag numbered "74" is on the guard. This is an honest and attractive example of a good rapier.
