Circa 1800 - 1820s classic Northeastern style pipe tomahawk with hand forged English style iron blade. Hardwood haft has a pewter mouthpiece and is covered in thin silver diamond escutcheons and 11 thin silver bands. With the extent of decoration observed, this could quite possibly be a presentation piece. Blade shows evidence of Indian etching with center punched circle of life design on the obverse and a cross on the reverse. Thin, 4-bar moulding under the chevron. 17" total length, 3" cutting edge, rim of bowl to cutting edge is 7 - 1/2". This exact axe is pictured in "Tomahawks *Pipe Axes* of the American Frontier" by John Baldwin, (pg. 107 Fig. 267) and is said to have been collected in Texas. For other similar example see "Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersmen Belt Axes" by Hartzler and Knowles (Pg. 121 Fig. 13). CONDITION: Shows heavy use and has been smoked. Missing wood or bone plug on forend and some loose inlay. BRM.
