Completely untouched, measuring 9-3/4" from the front of the visor to the front edge of the crown. Woven silver bullion suspensory cord with tassels, attached to silvered eagle buttons at each side. Scaled silvered chinstrap with leather backing and star motif buckle. Silvered 6 pointed star within sunburst side buttons. Silvered eagle front plate of exceptional quality, 5" from wing tip to wing tip. Multi layered 1-7/8" leather cockade with one-piece eagle button. The shako exhibits a noteworthy rear extension with separately affixed silvered band around the base. Thick leather visor with silvered trim, painted green on the underside. Interior retains the original 3" soft leather sweatband with decorative white polished cotton lining, printed on the crown "William Boyd/ Military Cap,/ Trunk & Harness Maker Taunton, Mass". Contained within its original wall paper box measuring 11" high and with a 11-1/2" diameter, the interior lined with Boston newspapers dated 1827. Box shows wear and the bottom is detached. A really choice example of this iconic piece of American military headgear, as worn from 1821 through the Mexican War. CONDITION: Superb condition, the leather finish with some very light crazing.
