Circa 1700, this sword was obviously made for someone wealthy. The high quality tapered triangle section blade has a blued section at the top with gilt decoration and a gold inlaid design on the back. It also has a deep partial fuller on the reverse side. The high quality gilt silver hilt is decorated on the clamshell guard with chased designs of cupids hunting and fishing surrounded by scrolls, all on a stippled ground. The concave interior of the guard shows a cupid with bow in pursuit of a rabbit on one side and a cupid with a sword and a dog on the other. The knuckle bow shows a bird on a perch on both sides, chased in relief in the centers. There are a series of English hallmarks on the guard which are partially obscured by the blade. There are also hallmarks on the left side of the knuckle bow. Pommel is decorated with a chased cupid on each side. Grip is wrapped with strands of twisted silver wire. CONDITION: Very good, blade retains most of original polish and about 20-30% of blue finish with traces of gilt decoration. Hilt retains about 50% of its original gilt finish with only some light wear to the most relief designs. Grip excellent. A most attractive and well-decorated small sword. DMG
