This fantastic horn dates 1750-1760 and measures about 10-1/2" overall across the bow. The horn is done by a professional engraver and features polychrome reds and blacks. There are a total of 53 engraved Indians and soldiers in great detail, all are engaged in battles or skirmishes. There are several cutoff limbs at the site of one fierce battle depicted near the top. Other scenes show Indians with scalps hanging from rods and sporting war clips. Some battle are in the woods and have soldiers and Indians laying on their stomachs firing shots from muskets. The largest and most organized battle of the horn is taking place at Fort Niagara. The rivers, towns and forts are extremely detailed. There is a large British crest in the center, a compass rose, a decorative cartouche with vacant inscription, a running buck, and two gentlemen with muskets or rifles. Some important places depicted and labeled include: Fort Ontaria, Fort Niagara, Lake Champlain, Ticonderoga, Lake George, Fort William Henry, Half Broock, Fort Miller, Saratoga, Stillwater, Half Moon, New York City, Albany, Schenectady, Oswego, Lake Ontario, Onyda Fort, Fort Newport, Wood Creek, Bull Fort, Canada Creek, d'Falls, Fort Stanwix, Fort Henry, Fort Hunter, Stonrabby, German Flats, Fort William Johnston, and others. The horn also has fall trees, windmills, ships, and British flags flying. The horn curate depicts maps of important places and key battles. Convex wood plug at base with a brass lanyard loop for strap attachment. CONDITION: Very good with a couple minor inactive insect nips. A very attractive French and Indian War map horn with rarely seen battle scenes.
