Probably Great Lakes region, late 18th or early 19th century. Measures 6 - 3/8" overall with 2" edge. Brass head decorated with seven engraved leaves on each side and with fluted borders on top and bottom. Dovetailed steel cutting blade. Globe-shaped brass bowl with engraved foliage decorations. Very good condition, brass retains a mellow patina with some darker areas and scattered marks from use, steel edge retains a spotted grey patina. This is a very nice example of an 18th century pipe tomahawk. For a similar, nearly identical example made by the same maker, see page 146 of "Accouterments IV" by James R. Johnston. Johnston dates this head from 1775-1800.

Item Dimensions: 6 - 3/8"
