Features 43 - 1/2" steel lined cast iron barrel, the smooth bore measures 37" in depth, 2 - 3/8" in diameter. Wood components are painted army green while the metal components are a flat black. Steel lined 37" tall, wooden, 16-spoke wagon wheels are mounted to both the cannon and limber carriages. The black paint has several minor scratches and rub marks with the largest on the rear of the barrel. Barrel has pilot divot, where the fuse hole can be drilled to make this a firing field gun. Minor surface freckling to all black painted surfaces. The army green paint on wooden surfaces is in very good condition with a few dings in the wood and finish. The limber army green paint too is in very good condition with a few minor scratches and dings. The metal hardware is painted flat black matching the cannon barrel and hardware, the finish is good with minor surface imperfections. The lid of the limber's chest is copper plated and is in very good condition. Includes ram and cleaning rods. The United States Army adopted a new standardized 6 - pounder field gun in 1841 as the aptly-designated Model 1841. The 1841 design was centered around an all brass, 3.6" diameter smoothbore barrel measuring approximately 60" long. Depending on the selected shot the weapon's lethality was about 1,000 yards. The American Model 1841 proved to be very effective against the Europeans rivals of its time. It was on full display during the Mexican - American War from 1846 - 1848 in which the United States Army saw victory. The 1841 was still in circulation during the American Civil War but the United States Army was seeking to replace it with the more capable Model 1857 "Napoleon" 12 - pounder series. When the Model 1857s became available in greater number, Union forces relegated their existing Model 1841 stock to reserves for use on naval vessels where their firepower might still be usable. For the South, the Model 1841 remained in service a time longer until better alternatives ware adopted. Lacking the industrial resources of the their counterparts in the North, many 1841s were often melted down to be reconstituted into newer, more modern cannon designs. This beautiful reproduction would make a great addition to anyone's collection of historical firearms.
