C:1912. Ludwig Hupfeld A.G. Bohlitz-Ehrenberg Leipzig, Germany. The Hupfeld Phonoliszt-Violina is regarded as the most successful automatic violin and piano playing machine ever made, and one of the most spectacular of all music machines. Each violin plays one string, with a bow of 1350 strands of horsehair, and devices to maintain constant tension despite humidity changes. Complex mechanisms reproduce violin expression, bowing, vibrato, staccato, accent and other nuances as well as piano expression, duplicating the playing of accomplished musicians. Hupfeld was quoted, "The most admirable quality of the Phonoliszt-Violina is its soul, thus the most important factor in violin playing has been accomplished to give soul to this self playing violin". PROVENANCE: Purchased from a restaurant in France and acquired by Jasper Sanfilippo in 1983. Acquired by the current owner from Sanfilippo Place de la Musique in 2012. Restored by Reblitz Restorations in Colorado Springs in 1986, and 2014. CONDITION: Immaculate restoration in 2014, showing light wear from transportation to the quartered oak cabinet. In full working condition with over 50 rolls. Restoration of one of these marvelous music machines can be upwards of 150K, and here is a near perfect example ready for its new home.
