Inscribed "PATRICK HENRY, VIRGINIA, USA" on the frame backing. Housed in a black painted frame, with brass plated iron liner and mat, brass acanthus leaf hanger with ring, and paperboard backing. Originally an oval portrait, the edges have been folded early on to fit the frame. Patrick Henry (1736-1799) was most notable for his declaration before the Second Virginia Convention in 1775, embracing the struggle for Independence, stating "Give me liberty, or give me death!". He subsequently served as the first and sixth post-colonial Governor of Virginia, from 1776-1779 and 1784-1786. He was a pivotal figure in the inclusion of the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution. This portrait likely dates from when he was first elected governor, and is arguably the earliest known portrait of Henry.
