JAMES ROLPH JR. CARVED AND PAINTED TOBACCONIST TRADE FIGURE

Circa 1880–1900, American, substantial carved and polychrome-painted wood tobacconist trade figure depicting a standing Native American man in feathered headdress and elaborate costume, modeled with beaded necklaces, layered feather decoration, sash and belt, the right hand lowered at his side and the extended left hand presenting a group of cigars. The full-length figure stands on an integral rectangular platform above a box-form wooden base and retains an old painted surface in red, green, black and gilt tones. Reportedly formerly in the collection of James “Sunny Jim” Rolph Jr., longtime Mayor of San Francisco and Governor of California from 1931 until his death in 1934, and accompanied by historical material including an early photograph appearing to depict the figure with Rolph. The association is particularly interesting within the context of early 20th-century California civic culture and the use of Native American imagery in public pageantry and organizations celebrating the state's history. CONDITION: Retains an old painted surface with areas of restoration and repainting, scattered abrasions, paint loss, age cracks and wear consistent with age and commercial display; base exhibits additional wear and surface losses. Overall structurally sound with strong visual presence.
