The full-round 57 1/2" barrel has a "hooked" breech, and is engraved "London" on the top flat with Birmingham proofs. The barrel may possibly have been shortened at the muzzle end, during its period of use. The walnut stock's contour and profile all suggest the post-Revolutionary War era, dating to 1790 or 1800. The lock is a British military style but has its markings removed which suggests that it may be the second lock, but done in period as the piece is still in its original flintlock configuration. The engraved brass hardware is classic 2nd half of the 18th century from and style with its engravings. The "acorn" Finial of the trigger guard is now missing, (an easily made repair). The walnut stock has its original patina but has had a glossy surface added (in modern years), which could be easily removed.
