Frederick MacMonnies (1863-1937). Circa 1890. This miniature bronze sculpture reflects the apprenticeship under the tutelage of St. Gaudens. The statue shows the mythical Greek prankster Pan who is blowing the twin flutes so that his followers will come to him. He stands on the world, which is held up by fish. The bronze has a foundry mark of Roman Bronze Works, and rests on a circular black marble plinth. This statue is featured in the Berman book of bronzes, vol. 3, page 724 numbers 2628-9. This sculpture is in very good condition.
