Considered one of the crown jewels in every U.S. martial collection, these rifles were made via special order for commissioned officers only from 1875 to 1885. It is believed that the total production of this model in all three variations totaled 477 rifles. None were serial numbered. This is a standard second model chambered for th .45-70 govt cartridge and exhibits all of the traits one would expect to find on this rare trapdoor. To include a 26" full round barrel, folding globe front sight, 1877 trapdoor rear sight, a wooden ramrod with nickel finial, and engraved German nickel nose cap, along range rear tang sight, VP proofed barrel, a "U" stamped rear barrel band, engraved U.S. Springfield 1873 lockplate with eagle, engraved hammer and release, block is stamped Model U.S. 73 with an eagle head and is engraved, engraved tang. Has the coarsely checkered walnut stock, and engraved U.S. stamped buttplate. Perfect action. Excellent strong bore with some frosting. Engraved trigger guard. Barrel is a pleasing smooth blue-brown patina, as is the action and lockplate. Stock is excellent with a little dark oil staining at band. This rifle has been completely disassembled for inspection and every part is as it was manufactured at the Springfield plant. A fine example of a field-used Springfield Officers Model Trapdoor rifle.
