Woodehead & Hartley operated out of 36 Howard Street, Sheffield from 1840 to 1849. It is the classic so called "Coffin" style (based on the handle) clip point bowie knife. Maker and address are stamped on the ricasso. The quillion base and ricasso are German silver. The scales are horn with seven bolsters and silver escutcheon. The blade is 8-1/8" long and 1-3/8" wide. Total length of knife is 12-1/4". Blade is clean with a nice point, perfect stamps, and light pitting. Scales are perfect. Pommel is engraved on both sides with American eagle. Comes with leather sheath with no belt holder and tip of scabbard missing. A true high quality classic coffin bowie manufactured by well-known early maker in fine condition. A similar style knife can be found on page 95 of the second edition of "Bowie Knife & Bayonets of the Ben Palmer Collection".
