Without question, one of the rarest 19th Century baits known is this Thomas Maroney spring hook torpedo type bait. This 3-1/2" painted nickel plated bait has PAT APLD FOR on one side of it's tail, with a large box swivel line tie, and opposing fins or wings to cause the bait to spin. Patent #627,344 is pictured in Arlan Carter's book, "19th Century Fishing Lures" on page 296 under the section "Patent Drawings of Unfound Lures". To date, we only know of 2 examples of this scarce bait. Condition is very good+ with paint wear and 1 missing hook. The remaining hook does set and by squeezing the tail together, is triggered.
THOMAS MARONEY PATENT FISH BAIT, BUFFALO, NY.
