39" barrel, .42 bore-percussionJacob F Gehrett was a gunsmith from Orbisonia, Penn. and was from a well-known gunsmith family that included James and John. He built custom rifles during the mid-19th century. This rifle features a signed full octagon barrel, there is a dove-tail at the rear sight which has been removed as well as a dove-tail front sight and there is an interesting period peep sight mounted at the rear tang. It appears this rifle was originally a flintlock and was converted to a percussion and there is a plate where the flintlock mechanism originally was. The lock is also stamped Gehrett, has a beautiful and slender full length stock with a high finish hand rubbed oil finish. The rod is secured by 3 brass thimbles and a brass nose cap, sports set triggers with an iron butt plate and brass toe plate. The right side of stock has one simple silver ornament. The brass patchbox exhibits light engraving on the box and side plates and has a nickel oval thumb piece. The left side of stock has a shallow cheek piece with a elongated nickel 8 point star matching nickel decoration as on right side. The barrel is a dark gun metal gray with dark patina with age freckling as is the lock. The stock is in excellent condition with beautiful original finish. Another lovely early Pennsylvania signed long rifle from a famous maker in excellent all original condition with the exception of the percussion conversion.
