39" barrel, .46bore The full octagon barrel is simply signed J S J. A gunsmith John S Johnston, nephew of John Hand and cousin of James H operated a gun shop in the 1840s in Washington township, Franklin County as well as Huntington county in McConnellstown Pa. This is a percussion rifle that in the ornamentation and percussion system coincide with this maker. Features the full octagon barrel with the set rear sight and small dove tail front sight, full stock with light striped pattern and a rich hand rubbed piano finish. The lock is not marked and has an adjustable set triggers, 3 brass thimble rod retainer with brass for end tip, simple brass patch box with light engraving and very similar in layout to that of John Johnston, figure 217 in the Kentucky rifle patch boxes volume. 2. Has a brass butt plate with a brass toe plate, the barrel and lock are a smooth brown patina, stock is in excellent condition with a beautiful original finish but there are two contained cracks at butt and a period repair crack at wrist. Fine signed mid-19th century Penn. Full stock percussion rifle.
