One of the most historically significant baits of all time, the Fred Rhodes Perfect Casting Minnow from Kalamazoo, MI, patented December 13, 1904! The 5 hook Perfect, coveted by many, is seldom seen and rarely offered for sale. This one, with shaded back, silver side and belly, beautiful red gills and belly accents, is rigged with brass tack eyes, unmarked nickel silver props, wire through hardware anchoring the 4 split ring held side trebles, and the most important component, the external hanging belly weight! Condition is better than most showing minimal "in use" wear and hook rash along the middle right side. Lot also includes a rough condition National Sportsman magazine fromDecember 1904, showing the original advertisement from Fred D Rhodes, 116 Bush St., Kalamazoo, MI. for his wonderful invention, the Perfect Casting Minnow. Interestingly enough, Rhodes touts that all of the record catches in Kalamazoo lakes and rivers were made with this minnow in the 1903 season! Given that the patent was applied for on November 2, 1903, it's safe to say that Rhodes was making this well before it iced up in the winter of 1903! A true historical artifact that is approaching its 111th birthday!
