Combination percussion and rimfire with unique rolling block type action having the exposed percussion nipple on top of block and the inside mounted rimfire firing pin on its lower section. Handsome wide brass frame marked “M. V. KACER / PAT’D.” Made to accept a .32 rimfire cartridge or a paper cartridge for percussion use. 24" octagon barrel retains a pleasing mix of blue-brown patina with some freckling and high edge wear. Bore very good with strong visible rifling. Sharp frame legends. Deluxe walnut stock in very good condition. The toe has a repaired crack running from left to right 3". Forend is attached with a screw and two brass studs with some chipping around studs. 3/4" left side panel at tang. Brass butt plate and handsome, fancy shaped and engraved brass patch box (to hold the percussion caps) has lightly engraved initials “MK” undoubtedly indicating personal ownership by the inventor Martin V. Kacer (made under his patent No. 273288 of March 6, 1883). Underside of barrel lightly marked “Belgium” merely indicating that Kacer utilized and imported the barrel or used one from another gun. The "Belgium" is washed out, indicating barrel was finished sometime after barrel stamp was applied. Martin Kacer operated out of St. Louis, Missouri, and applied for two patents in 1883; one was this breech loading firearm, while the other was a magazine gun. We could find no evidence that either of these ever made it into standard production. As such, this would be a great addition to any collection of rare and unusual American made 19th century single shot rifles.
