.38-55 caliber, Barrel length 29-3/4". The Marlin Ballard era began in 1875. This model is referred to in the factory catalog as the Rigby Model 6-1/2. A nearly identical rifle can be found on page 213, Figure 27-2 in the Ballard book by John Dutcher. Serial 14772 shows the same engraving, pattern, tang sight, checkering, and small roll over cheek piece with brass Swiss butt plate, adjustable globe adjustable front sight. This beautiful rifle remains in fine, original factory condition. The frame features scroll engraving with punch dot background and 2 antlered game panels. The breech is engraved as well as the barrel breech flats. Top flat is stamped "Ballard". Left side of frame has the Marlin Firearms address. Barrel retains approx 95% original factory blue. Blending with some soft patina and some extremely minor age freckling. The frame retains evidence of case colors and patterning. The deluxe checkered fiery grain walnut stock is superb. The horn fore-end tip is near mint. This rifle is not equipped with a rear sight but does sport an original Marlin Ballard tang sight. Strong rifle bore. Swiss brass butt plate is numbered to the gun. There is a 1/4" hairline crack at bottom butt plate screw. An incredible, collector grade, high condition, Marlin Ballard. Considered by many single shot enthusiasts as the finest single shot ever manufactured.
