36” barrel in .50-70 caliber. Between 1871 and 1872 Springfield Armory, on Royalty agreement with the Remington Arms Company, produced 10,0001 rolling block rifles. This rifle uses the rolling block action, other details are the same as the Model 1870 Remington U.S. Navy rifle. Features iron mountings, finished bright, with the case colored frame and hammer. The tang has the Remington patent. Frame retains approximately 80% bright case colors. Left side if stamped “Model 1871”, right side is stamped “U.S. Springfield 1872” with eagle. Has the sling swivel on front band and trigger guard. Walnut stock with curved carbine butt. Has the folding adjustable leaf military rear sight, pinched front sight, two barrel bands stamped “U”. Barrel and bands are a soft patina, having never been cleaned. Walnut stocks are near mint with a perfect “E.S.A.” cartouche on left side. Gun does not appear to have been used or issued. Still has the raised grain. Butt plate is stamped “U.S.” and is brown patina from storage. Strong, clean, rifled bore with a little minor abrasion. A few nicks in stock from storage.
