20" barrel in .38-40 caliber. According to factory research, this carbine was shipped on April 1, 1892 as a standard .38 caliber carbine. Features full round barrel, full magazine, two bands, carbine post front sight, 1873 dated carbine ladder rear sight, blued finish, saddle ring and stud, and walnut stocks with carbine buttplate. This example is very clean. Metal is basically a soft blue-brown patina with sharp barrel legends. Case colors have darkened. Original walnut stocks are far better than usually found on this model, proud to metal, beautiful original sheen, with no cracks. It is interesting to note that the number "24" is professionally stamped on both the forend and buttstock, which would indicate some sort of rack number as usually found when used by police departments, prisons, and government institutions (mail, railroad, etc). It is a shame the Winchester letters do not give us more information as we can only speculate where this carbine was used.
