Daniel Draper, director of the meteorological observatory in Central Park, established the Draper Manufacturing Co. in the mid-1880s and began producing self-recording meteorological instruments. This example is marked "DRAPER'S SELF-RECORDING THERMOMETER / PAT'D 1887 / 152 FRONT ST. N.Y. CITY ." It is a bimetallic instrument with a flat chart (missing) that revolves once a week. The Lick Observatory in California donated theirs to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 1960. The housing is constructed from cast iron, perforated sheet copper and glass. Two keys for a small padlock are included.
